This culture is a Gram-negative marine bacterium. It is a halophile, originally isolated from salt marsh mud, and requires a medium that is between 1.5 and 2% salt. Vibrio natriegens is notable for its extremely fast growth. Doubling time can be in as little as 10 minutes in ideal conditions. E. coli, by comparison, has a 20-minute doubling time. This makes Vibrio natriegens ideal for use in growth curve experiments, as several generations can be produced, even in a 60- to 90-minute lab period.

Optimal growth occurs at around 26° C, meaning that this culture does not require an incubator.
