Description
Carolina Biological’s Wisconsin Fast Plants are a type of rapid-cycling Brassica rapa (a member of the mustard family) that were developed specifically for educational and research purposes. They are widely used in classrooms to study plant life cycles, genetics, and environmental science.
Key Features of Wisconsin Fast Plants:
- Rapid Growth: They complete their life cycle in about 35-45 days, making them ideal for classroom experiments.
- Small Size: They grow compactly, making them easy to cultivate in limited spaces.
- Minimal Requirements: They need continuous light, water, and nutrients but do not require soil (they are often grown hydroponically).
- Versatility: Used for studies in genetics, evolution, pollination, environmental science, and plant physiology.
This Wisconsin Fast Plants® seed is the standard for both form and performance but now includes a new feature that makes pollination even easier.
Through selective breeding, a purple stigma trait has been introduced to the Standard seed line. The high contrast between the purple stigma and yellow pollen allows students to easily determine which flowers have been pollinated. Successful pollination rates and seed production are significantly increased using seeds with this feature.
Just provide appropriate care conditions, and you can expect your plants to complete a full life cycle (what we call “seed to seed”) in about 35 to 40 days. The plants still flower in 13 to 17 days and are variable for expression of purple pigment in stems.
Main uses include life cycles, environmental science, botany, comparative morphology, and physiology.
