Description
Auxenochlorella sp. This freshwater, unicellular alga is notable for its prominent pyrenoids, a structure used to concentrate CO2 around the chloroplasts. Formerly known as Chlorella pyrenoidosa, this organism is high in antioxidants and is sometimes used in health foods. It has also been explored as a biofuel and as an oxygen source for space travel. Each green algae culture contains enough material for a class of 30 students.
For vegetative growth this culture requires a high light level of 100 to 200 foot-candles of light 18 to 24″ from the culture. Optimal medium: Alga-Gro® Freshwater (item #153752). Optimum growth temperature: 20° C.
