Product Code: 173839

Description

Intermediate—Easy to perform; requires some background knowledge.

Recommended for grade 9 and up. A karyotype is a chart showing an individual’s chromosomes. Preparing a karyotype is a standard step in diagnosing several human abnormalities. Using a printed, magnetic karyotype layout board and illustrations of human chromosomes, students prepare and analyze normal and abnormal human karyotypes. They identify each magnetic chromosome and its homologous pair based upon size, centromere position, and banding pattern, then arrange them in standard karyotype format on the magnetic layout board. Students can prepare karyotypes of the following: normal male, normal female, Down syndrome (trisomy 21) male or female, Klinfelter syndrome male, and Turner syndrome female. Kit materials are reusable.

This 1-Station Kit can be used as an additional station for large classes or a teacher demonstration.
