Explore the anatomy of 9 preserved fish from the 3 major phylogenetic groups with this hands-on dissection kit: superclass Agnatha (jawless fishes), class Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fishes), and superclass Osteichthyes (bony fishes). Students observe and learn about the anatomical characteristics of each group to gain a better understanding of fish taxonomy. Each student group then conducts a detailed investigation of 1 of the 9 specimens in the kit. Through their dissection, students observe unique anatomical characteristics such as skeletal composition, scales, and fins, as well as respiratory and feeding structures. As they examine the external and internal anatomy, students determine the correct taxonomic classification of their specimen. Student groups present their findings to the class.
The teacher’s manual contains extension activities and a reproducible student guide. The student guide contains background information, dissection guides for each of the fish specimens, and reflection questions.
