There’s been a robbery!

Grades 9–12. Introduce your students to DNA forensics with this fun, case-based kit while solidifying their understanding of genetic principles. Students examine the evidence from a robbery crime scene with a twist: all the suspects are related! Student investigators develop skills in presumptive blood testing, blood typing, and DNA fingerprinting.

Connect genetics with forensics

Students use the Kastle-Meyer test to determine if a stain found at the scene of the crime is indeed blood. They ABO type the blood and learn how to cast agarose gels, load DNA, and perform electrophoresis to compare DNA found at the scene with that of the suspects. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques and other common forensic tests are investigated. Finally, students use what they’ve learned about the evidence to solve the case.

Materials are sufficient for 32 students working in groups of 4. Receive a FREE digital teacher’s manual and student guide with kit purchase.
