Inquiries in Science®: Determining Chemical Formulas Kit

Product Code: 251206

Description

  • Determine the percent composition of substances
  • Use models to differentiate between empirical and molecular formulas
  • Help students meet the Next Generation Science Standards Performance Expectation HS-PS1-3.: Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence to compare the structure of substances at the bulk scale to infer the strength of electrical forces between particles.

Grades 9–12. Students discover the chemical composition of common substances through hands-on, inquiry-based activities. They first build and compare models of a substance’s empirical and molecular formulas. Students then perform a combustion reaction to determine the substance’s chemical composition, and use that information to determine the substance’s molecular formula and percent composition. Finally, students design experiments to determine the percent composition and/or molecular and empirical formulas for common substances.

Kit includes enough materials for at least 30 students working in groups. Receive a FREE digital Teacher’s Manual and Student Guide with kit purchase.
