Inquiries in Science®: Introducing Organic Chemistry Kit

Product Code: 251218

Description

  • Use models to investigate different classes of organic compounds
  • Explore newly developed polymers used in oil spill cleanup
  • Relate the function of plastics to their molecular shapes
  • Use NGSS practices of Developing and Using Models and Asking Questions and Defining Problems

Students explore the chemistry of carbon using a variety of modeling methods. Based on the models created, they learn about molecular shape, stereochemistry, isomerism, and identifying different classes of organic compounds. A series of exercises help students relate organic molecule structures to their functional applications. In the final activity, students design and conduct their own experiment to evaluate the efficiency of synthetic and natural hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymers in cleaning up an oil spill.

This kit can help you teach the cross-cutting concepts of Patterns, Structure and Function, and Models. Kit contains materials for 30 students working in groups of 3.
