Description
Advanced—For experienced high school and college classes; requires some technical skill.
This experiment provides an introduction to human population genetics as participants learn to score genotypes and calculate genotype and allele frequencies. Students will:
- Use safe saline mouthwash and Chelex® extraction to obtain their own DNA sample
- Amplify a 300-nucleotide Alu insertion into an intron of the H-cadherin gene
- Use electrophoresis to separate the 2 alleles
- Determine their own genotype
Note: Kit is shipped with perishable materials.
