In this set of investigations, students have the opportunity to develop their analytical skills by delving into historical data and to apply these techniques to unique datasets. The tasks within this activity encompass the collection, organization, and analysis of data, culminating in the application of global case study data to explore a diverse array of world population parameters. Kit provides materials for 8 groups of students.

Unit Connection
This laboratory investigation correlates to Unit 3: Populations, topics 3.5 Population Growth Resource Availability, 3.6 Age Structure Diagrams, 3.7 Total Fertility Rate, and 3.8 Human Population Dynamics.

Includes 1-year access to digital resources that support instruction. Digital resources may include teacher manual and student guide, prelab activities and setup videos, simulations, and postlab analysis and assessments.

Prior Knowledge and Skills
Students should be familiar with the following skills or concepts:

  • Basic knowledge of creating and evaluating graphs based on a data set
  • Basic knowledge of demographic terms such as “birth rate,” “death rate,” “total fertility rate,” “infant mortality rate,” “life expectancy,” and “population growth rate”
  • Basic understanding of the concept of carrying capacity
  • Simple data collection methods, including censuses and demographic factors
