Intermediate—Easy to perform; requires some background knowledge.
Using a printed magnetic karyotype layout board and magnetic chromosomes, this kit makes it easy for you and your students to go hands on with human karyotyping. Students prepare and analyze normal and abnormal human karyotypes by identifying and matching each magnetic chromosome piece to its printed homologous pair on the board based upon the size, centromere position, and banding pattern of each chromosome.
The kit includes enough materials for students to prepare karyotypes of:
- A normal male
- A normal female
- Down syndrome (trisomy 21), male and female
- Klinefelter syndrome male
- Turner syndrome female
Designed with reusability in mind, this kit will ensure that your students learn how to identify chromosomal alterations that result in genetic disorders by creating and analyzing karyotypes in a similar way that scientist do.
Product Features
- This 8-station kit provides enough materials for 8 student groups of 4 (32 students total)
- Printed magnetic board is approximately 11-3/10 x 6-4/5”
- Includes teacher’s manual with student guide
Interested in an enlarged board for classroom demonstrations? Check out the demonstration variant of this kit (item #173836). Replacement magnetic chromosomes for this kit are available separately (#173838).
Learning Objectives
- Students will learn about human cytogenetics and the chromosomal basis of certain diseases by analyzing normal and abnormal human karyotypes.
- Students will learn about meiotic nondisjunction and how it can lead to chromosomal abnormalities.
- Students will gain an understanding of the molecular basis for heredity.
- Students will learn about the intersection of science and technology, and about science as a human endeavor, through explanations and examples of karyotyping.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should have some understanding of mitosis, meiosis, chromosome structure and function, and inheritance.
