Product Details
Intermediate—Easy to perform; requires some background knowledge.
Simulate the use of DNA in forensic investigations with this kit that has students electrophorese DNA samples from a fictional crime scene and 2 suspects. The DNA samples simulate the results of polymerase chain reaction, providing opportunities to teach and reinforce that concept. Upon completing the electrophoresis, students use their simulated DNA fingerprint to determine which suspect (if either) is the guilty party.
Product Features
- DNA fingerprints of 2 suspects are compared at 2 loci
- Uses CarolinaBLU® stain
- Kit includes materials for 8 student stations
Time Requirement
Teacher prep, 30 min before lab. Two to three 50-minute class periods.
Digital Resources
Includes 1-year access to digital resources that include a teacher’s manual, student guide, and more.
Learning Objectives
- Learn about polymerase chain reaction and DNA fingerprinting.
- Perform gel electrophoresis, a basic technique for separating DNA fragments by size.
- Learn about real-world applications of PCR.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills
Students should have some understanding of DNA structure and function, DNA fingerprinting, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and gel electrophoresis.
