eDNA: Sampling Soil for Antibiotic Resistance Kit (without consumables)

Product Code: 211396

Description

Product Details
Advanced—For experienced high school and college classes; requires some technical skill.

Engage your students in the growing field of eDNA by challenging them to participate in ongoing research to monitor the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in soil. Students collect soil samples based on their own hypotheses about resistance hotspots, extract environmental DNA from soil, and use PCR and gel electrophoresis to test their samples for evidence of tetracycline resistance. The outcome of this kit may, or may not, demonstrate the presence of tetracycline resistance (depending on the presence or absence of resistant bacteria in the sample tested), providing your class with an authentic scientific investigation. Created in conjunction with the PARE (Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment) project, students contribute their final data to a national database of antibiotic resistance surveillance, making them bona fide research scientists after completing the activity!
