Description
Grades 9–12.
- Develop a heating curve to show different phases of water
- Investigate the effects of pressure and temperature on water
- Design and conduct a heat of fusion experiment
Students work together in groups to experimentally produce partial heat curves and phase diagrams for water and to determine the heat of vaporization for water. Through these activities they develop an understanding of the states of matter and investigate the effect of pressure on boiling temperature. As a final activity, students design and perform a protocol for determining the heat of fusion for ice. Materials are sufficient for 30 students working in groups of 3.
