Description
Product Details
The Celestial Globe is a demonstration device that shows the apparent positions of the stars visible from Earth. The 3-dimensional representation allows students to visualize the relative angular positions of the constellations and to estimate which stars will be visible from different places on Earth for any rotational position of the planet.
Product Features
- Two concentric spheres are mounted on a common axle, supported by a frame on a base
- Inner sphere, representing Earth, is 4″ in diameter; continents are marked in correct relative positions
- Outer sphere is transparent and 12-1/2″ in diameter; constellations and their stars are marked on it
- Yellow shading indicates the Milky Way, the plane of our galaxy
- Axle allows both spheres to rotate independently
- Angle scale is marked in 1° increments on the frame; angles extend from zero at the equator to 87° in both directions
- Frame is fixed to the base so the axle is held at an angle of 23.5° to vertical, representing the inclination of Earth’s spin axis to the axis of its orbit around the Sun
