Enrich your students’ study of oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry, pH, chemical bonding, and stoichiometry with this student-engaged, teacher-led demonstration. Students make predictions about the results of water electrolysis and observe a colorful, intuitive activity. They then illustrate the decomposition of water and the flow of electrons through an electrical circuit to help explain the concepts. Students’ knowledge is extended by brainstorming real-world and career applications of electrochemistry. With Carolina Chemonstrations®, students are active participants in demonstrations. This demonstration requires approximately 15 min and materials are sufficient for 5 demonstrations.
