American Chemical Society: Chemistry’s Colorful Clue Lab Activity Kit

Grades 4–8. Students encounter a mystery where the water in a monitored stream has become acidic. In order to help solve the mystery, the lessons in this lab explore the color changes of a pH indicator solution. After using the indicator to classify different substances as either acidic, basic, or neutral, the students piece together what happened to the stream. Upon completion of this activity, students generate carbon dioxide gas through a chemical reaction and determine if the carbon dioxide may have affected the pH of a local stream. The kit contains enough materials for multiple classes of 32 students and a teacher’s guide, which includes student activity sheets.
